I really wish I had taken a “before” photo of myself and Bryan when we started our weight loss journey in January 2017. But when I sort through my photos, most of them are just head shots. These photos are from a Breakfast with Santa event in December 2016, right before my dad died:
Bryan and I had unintentionally become masters of the upper torso shot. And we had also become very good at avoiding cameras altogether. We chose to always keep our cameras pointing forward at our son, Nicholas.
But we were determined to change that!
January 2, 2017 was the start of our weight loss journey. We had decided as a couple that we would follow a low carbohydrate, high protein diet - similar to Atkins. Within the first two weeks, I dropped 13 pounds, and Bryan dropped an astounding 28. We were so excited and so motivated!!
Over the next few weeks, the weight continued to come off easily; 4-5 pounds a week for me, 8-9 pounds a week for Bryan. By the end of February, we had seen some real progress!
Then, we stalled. Over the next few weeks Bryan and I only lost a pound or two a week, even with no cheat days. Determined to keep our momentum, Bryan reached out to a former teammate who had been sharing information about a ketogenic diet on social media.
“Eat fat to lose fat.”
The first time I heard this phrase, I believe I laughed out loud. Eating slabs of butter and adding oil to your food seemed entirely counterintuitive for weight loss. But, we had stalled so much (and Bryan had lost so much more weight than me!), I was willing to give it a try.
I immediately took to Pinterest (a stay-at-home-mom’s best friend) to search for “ketogenic” recipes. I couldn’t believe how many there were!
As the year progressed, I shared recipes on Facebook, or took screen shots and “filed” them on the Cloud (I still can’t find half of them). Regardless, Bryan and I had happy, SHRINKING bellies! By summer 2017, I had lost 45 pounds, and Bryan had lost an astounding 85.
We were on top of the world! And then, life - and excuses - got in the way.
We started to have a hardcore stall around our son’s birthday in July 2017. Cupcakes. Cupcakes. Cupcakes. Need I say more?
Eight pound weight gain in two days. Two weeks to lose that weight.
My birthday in mid August meant homemade cookie cake from Bryan and Nicholas and a cheat meal at Red Lobster. Cookies + all the Cheddar Bay Biscuits = Six pound weight gain.
Repeat this process for the remainder of the year with trips to amusement parks, Halloween, and the holidays. We were stuck, stuck, stuck.
So, we immediately got back on a “strict” keto diet right after Christmas 2017. But this time, the weight wasn’t falling off. In fact, it wasn’t going anywhere. We were still stalled!
Thankfully, Bryan and I had a BREAKTHROUGH over the last few weeks and we are finally moving in the right direction again! The combination of a keto tracking app (to track “macros” - I’ll explain those later) and watching out for “sneaky” carbs has been a magic bullet (so far)! But, as we have learned along this journey, this may not be the end of our road bumps.
